22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us[a] so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John[b] said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[c] the way for the Lord,’[d] as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.[e])[f]

Pharisees differed with Sadducees on certain doctrines and patterns of behavior. The Pharisees were strict and zealous adherents to the laws of the OT and to numerous additional traditions such as angels and bodily resurrection.
